My, the past week has been strange.
We were in Maine last weekend, the result of an altogether unplanned trip that we decided to take on Saturday morning. I found it to be a compelling jaunt into unexplored territory, though at the same time I found the destination strangely familiar; Portland reminds me of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, only with more water.
The day before that, we were at a local fair. It was called the Connecticut Valley Fair. There we observed both an ox pull and lawn mower races. While I found the over-powered lawn equipment quite interesting, it is now my contention that one does not understand strain until one sees the bulging eyes and veins of an adult ox as it drags thousands of pounds of concrete across a plane of mud.
So it’s been a horizon-broadening set of days for me. That’s a good thing. Work is now dangerously close to winding down entirely (I say “dangerously” because like someone who is about to leave home for weeks, I have this underlying fear that I am forgetting some crucial obligation as I get ready to leave). But I have my list of things to do there before I leave, and have faith that they will all be completed. At the same time, I’m getting ready for law school, which starts in less than a month. And I am watching with bated breath as Jessamyn pushes forward with what might very well be the next stage in her professional carreer.
Many, many things are happening. I wonder why I’m not too particularly stressed out about it all.
