Change of Venue :: April 26th, 2002 ::
Is it weird that I have a friend who I’ve known since kindergarten? Have you stayed in contact with anyone from that time in your life?
Every once in a while, like maybe twice a year or so, my friend Sean and band he plays with come to town. They’re out of New York City, but they started here, and they come back every once in a while, usually to play at some bar where they are pretty well ignored by the patrons, who are primarily there for the beer. But they played last night, at a theater known more for it’s architecture and its performers than for what the bar has on tap.
I saw them at their best. It’s amazing what a change of venue can do. And to be uncharacteristically unironic for a moment, it’s always unspeakably wonderful to see old friends continue to do well.
Seeing old friends always brings waves of nostalgia. Between seeing Sean and packing my life into a few boxes, I’m overwhelmed with old memories of being thirteen and skateboarding; of going to different high schools but staying in touch; of dealing with breakups with girlfriends and dissipating friendships; of growing into the English/computer geek who maintains this site. As I’ve had to deal with all of that crap that is just a part of losing innocence, I’ve always had that friendship, which has been nothing short of invaluable.
