West Topsham, VT :: July 27th, 2002 ::

So, after sixteen days on the road, we got back a couple of days ago. Though I agree with Jessamyn’s assessment that I don’t take as easily as she does to the travelling life, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I am now clutching the porch. Gasping for breath maybe, but clawing at the floorboards whenever the prospect of leaving again comes up? Hardly.

Our sixteen-day tour brought us through dramatically different climates, cities, and cultures. It’s nice to see that the diversity of American life is still strong, in spite of what the homogenous message of mass media tries to tell me. But it is nice to take a break for a while. Today Jessamyn, her mom, and I head off to the town auction, then later this afternoon my family will be in town for a two week vacation. Overall I’m planning on feelings of familiarity after weeks of exploration and travel, which is definitely welcome, even if I’m not clutching the porch.
