Midwest :: November 30th, 2002 ::

We’ve been in Milwaukee for nearly four days, and it’s been colder in the past twenty-four hours than it has been in the past two years. Combining that condition with the blizzard I had to drive through between Cleveland and Toledo on Tuesday, not to mention the eighteen inches of snow we saw in Vermont before we left, the more paranoid of us might start to think that I bring adverse winter conditions with me wherever I go. Of course, I don’t think that’s the case.

Seeing the family has been nice. However, I’ve also realized that I have no real inclination to move back here. While the people I like will keep me coming back to visit, the idea of setting up another residence in the area seeems pretty far-fetched. That’s probably for a lot of reasons, most of them having to do with the fact that I can retrace my personal history all the way back to my birth within the confines of the County limits. But whatever — it’s still a nice place to visit.

Also significant on this trip is the fact that Jessamyn and I will be parting ways for the winter. Though I’m looking forward to spending the winter in Vermont, the difficulty of being separated from Jessamyn is becoming slightly more real. I’ve spent the last three days trying to communcate this, and I think I’ve been successful, mostly.

I’m thinking whatever discontent I wind up feeling will be the driving force to get me out traveling in the coming months. The effort to get on a plane or behind the wheel of a car is invariably more worthwhile when there’s someone to see on the other end.
