Looking Back, Forward :: March 4th, 2003 ::
Up until last year, I loathed February more than any other month. Cold and depressing, with no holildays save Valentines Day and President’s Day, there was very little to look forward to in those four weeks, and what I remember most about February back then was my wishing for March, which was very similar both in weather and lack of holidays, but at least it held the promise of Spring. Yes, back then the only good thing about it was how short it was.
But the past two Februaries have gone against those previous characterizations. Last year I spent the entire month in Seattle, and this year I spent part of it in Seattle, part of it down in Boston, and the rest of it at work. At work, where spend quite a bit of time installing new versions of Linux, compiling apache and PHP, working on XML, building new databases, and generally geeking out in all those ways that drove people crazy when I wasn’t working last summer. So here’s hoping that my new experiences in February represent a new trend for the month. Wouldn’t it be a kick if I someday actually started looking forward to this time of year?
Of course, I don’t see that happening until I move some place where the weather isn’t so brutal.
